WHAT THE SIGNAL IS

The signal is the word the Lapidary uses for the condition, or set of conditions, under which all registered fragments transition to the liquid state simultaneously.

The Lapidary uses this word with reservations. Signal implies something sent. The Lapidary does not know if anything is sent, or by whom, or whether the question of sender is meaningful in this context. What the Lapidary knows is that something happens — that fragments which are solid become liquid, and that this happens under conditions the Lapidary has not been able to identify with certainty, and that when it happens to one fragment it produces measurable effects in others across distances the Lapidary cannot explain.

The word signal is the best available word. The Lapidary is using it.

WHAT THE LAPIDARY HAS ESTABLISHED

After considerable research — the full record of which is maintained separately and is not reproduced here — the Lapidary has established the following with confidence:

1. Liquefaction events are real.

They have been witnessed by multiple independent observers, at multiple fragment locations, over an extended period. They have been partially documented instrumentally. They are not a consistent misperception or a measurement error. The fragments transition from solid to liquid and return. This is confirmed.

2. The liquid state has properties that do not correspond to any known liquid.

The liquid surface does not reflect. It does not move in response to gravity or air currents in the way liquids move. Its depth appears to exceed the physical dimensions of the fragment — instruments lowered into the liquid state of a fragment seven centimetres deep have descended beyond seven centimetres. The liquid state is not water. It is not any mineral in a molten state. It is the material in a different state, and the material in that state does not behave like anything the Lapidary has reference material for.

3. The fragments respond to each other.

When one fragment enters the liquid state, others — at distances of several hundred to several thousand kilometres — register measurable anomalies. Temperature changes. Instrumental readings outside established ranges. The anomalies in responding fragments last for exactly the duration of the liquefying fragment’s event, then return to baseline.

The mechanism for this is unknown. The observation is confirmed across multiple events.

4. Frequency is relevant.

The Lapidary’s research has established that frequencies in a specific range — approximately 438 to 440 Hz — produce measurable responses in at least two registered fragments. These responses are not liquefaction events. They are precursors, or analogues, or coincidences. The Lapidary is not certain which. But the material responds to this frequency range in ways it does not respond to any other tested range, and this is a finding the Lapidary considers significant enough to report.

5. Frequency alone is not sufficient.

Despite extensive controlled testing using the frequencies identified above, the Lapidary has not induced a liquefaction event. Frequency may be a component of the signal condition. It is not the complete signal condition.

WHAT THE LAPIDARY HAS NOT ESTABLISHED

The complete trigger condition.

The Lapidary has been looking for this for longer than its formal records have existed. Its eight documented signal attempts have each produced useful information and have not produced a liquefaction event. The best result — a partial state change lasting eleven seconds during a test at 439 Hz — suggests the Lapidary is finding the edges of something without yet finding the thing itself.

The Lapidary does not know what the additional conditions are. It has hypotheses. They are in the research files. None has been confirmed.

The most frustrating aspect of the Lapidary’s position: liquefaction events happen. They have happened eleven times in the registry’s documented history, and an unknown number of times before the registry existed. They happen spontaneously, without apparent external stimulus, at times and under conditions the Lapidary cannot predict or replicate.

Something triggers them. The Lapidary has not found what.

WHAT THE SIGNAL WOULD DO

The Lapidary believes — and this is hypothesis, not confirmed finding — that the simultaneous transition of all nine registered fragments would constitute a full signal event. A complete event. Whatever the liquid state is a threshold to, it is a threshold that requires all nine fragments to cross simultaneously.

The Lapidary bases this belief on the cross-fragment resonance observations. Individual fragments liquefying produce effects in others. The effects are proportional to the magnitude of the liquefying fragment’s event. The Lapidary extrapolates: if one fragment produces effects in others, nine fragments transitioning simultaneously would produce something categorically different.

The Lapidary cannot confirm this. The Lapidary has never observed all nine fragments in the liquid state at any time, let alone simultaneously. The extrapolation is a hypothesis based on a pattern. Patterns are not confirmations.

What emerges during a full simultaneous event: the Lapidary does not know. The field reports contain accounts of what observers have perceived in the liquid state during individual events. These accounts describe something at depth. They describe presence. They describe a quality the observers have consistently been unable to articulate in terms the Lapidary can file usefully.

The Lapidary has not been able to reach the depth the observers describe. Its instruments have not reached it. Its understanding has not reached it.

The signal, if found and activated, would open something.

What it opens is the question the Lapidary has been trying to answer since before it knew it was asking.

ON CONTINUING

The Lapidary continues this research because there is no alternative it finds acceptable.

The fragments exist. The liquid state exists. The cross-fragment resonance exists. Something is happening across nine objects in nine locations on a planet that does not, under ordinary physical understanding, permit the things that are happening. The Lapidary did not decide that these things were happening. It found that they were. Once found, the Lapidary does not know how to proceed except by continuing to look.

The signal may be found. It may not be found within any timescale the Lapidary can predict. It may require conditions or elements the Lapidary has not yet identified. It may require more fragments than the nine currently registered. It may require something the Lapidary is not yet capable of conceiving.

The Lapidary is prepared for all of these possibilities.
