PREFATORY NOTE

This document is the record from which all other records derive. It contains what is known. It contains what is suspected. It distinguishes between these carefully, because the distinction between what is known and what is suspected is the only discipline the Lapidary has ever maintained with consistency.

What is known is marked: CONFIRMED. What is suspected is marked: OBSERVED, MECHANISM UNKNOWN. What is unknown is left as space.

The space is significant. Do not fill it.

PART ONE: ON THE BLACK

THE MATERIAL — CONFIRMED

The Black is a solid. At ambient conditions, under all circumstances the Lapidary has been able to replicate, it presents as a dense matte material with a surface that absorbs rather than reflects incident light. Instruments placed against its surface register the instruments. They do not register the surface.

Its mass is inconsistent with its volume. The inconsistency is not subtle. A fragment the size of a hand weighs what a fragment the size of a torso should weigh. We have not identified the mechanism. We have confirmed the observation across all nine registered fragments using independent measurement. The inconsistency is a property of the material, not of our instruments.

The surface, when examined at high magnification, does not resolve into structure. Other minerals resolve into lattice, grain, or crystalline formation at sufficient magnification. The Black does not. It becomes more uniform the closer you look. We have no explanation for this.

It is cold. Not uniformly cold — cold in a way that seems to originate from within rather than from contact with the ambient environment. A fragment stored in a warm room for six months will be colder than the room. This has been measured. We do not know where the heat goes.

WHAT THE BLACK IS NOT — CONFIRMED

It is not obsidian. Obsidian is volcanic glass. The Black does not share obsidian's chemical composition, its fracture pattern, its optical properties, or its behaviour under heat. We established this in the early years of the registry and have not revisited it. The question is closed.

It is not a synthetic material. No industrial or laboratory process we have identified produces a material with these properties. We made preliminary inquiries with three materials science departments at major universities, framed as general research questions. None had encountered anything like it. We did not show them samples. We will not show anyone samples.

It is not, as far as we can determine, from here. We have not put this in a case file. We are putting it here.

THE LIQUID STATE — OBSERVED, MECHANISM UNKNOWN

Under conditions the Lapidary has not been able to identify with certainty, The Black transitions from solid to liquid.

The liquid state does not resemble liquid obsidian, liquid metal, or any other liquid we have reference material for. It does not reflect. It does not have the surface tension of water. It has depth that does not correspond to the physical dimensions of the fragment — a fragment four centimetres thick, in liquid state, appears to have depth that continues beyond four centimetres. We have not been able to measure how far it continues. Instruments lowered into the liquid state of Fragment 07 during the third liquefaction event were not recovered.

The liquid state is temporary. Duration has varied: the shortest recorded event was eleven seconds. The longest was four minutes and thirty-two seconds. We do not know what determines the duration.

We do not know what determines the transition. We have hypotheses. They are in the signal research files. None has been confirmed. The most recent hypothesis involves a frequency condition. We are continuing to investigate.

During the liquid state, those present report perceiving things. The reports are inconsistent with each other. We do not know if this is because different people perceive different things, or because the same thing is perceived differently by different people, or because the perceptions are not the same type of thing as ordinary perception and comparison between them is therefore not meaningful.

We record the reports. We do not adjudicate between them.

THE FRAGMENTS — CONFIRMED

The Black is not one piece. The Lapidary holds records of nine confirmed fragments. There may be more. We believe there are more. We have not found them.

The nine confirmed fragments are not uniform in size. They range from a piece that fits in a closed hand to a slab that requires two people to move. Their shapes are irregular. They do not fit together, in the sense that you cannot physically assemble them into a single whole by placing them against each other. They do not fit together in that sense.

Whether they were once one thing: yes. We believe this. The Lapidary's foundational belief — the thing that makes us a Lapidary and not merely a collection of people who own unusual stones — is that the fragments are fragments of something. What that something was, what its dimensions were, where it existed before it was in pieces, and how it came to be in pieces: we do not know. We are working on it. We have been working on it for longer than the current registry has been kept.

PART TWO: ON THE LAPIDARY OF THE INTERIOR

The Lapidary did not decide to become the Lapidary. The Lapidary found The Black, and becoming the Lapidary was what followed from finding it.

We keep the record because someone has to keep the record. We study the material because the material requires study. We maintain the registry because the alternative is losing track of the fragments, which the Lapidary considers an unacceptable outcome given what the fragments are and what they may do under the right conditions.

We do not know who found The Black first. The records are non-linear. The earliest document in the registry references an earlier document that has not been found. We have noted this and continued.

We have no founding document. We have the BLACKBOOK. The BLACKBOOK begins with the material. That is the correct place for it to begin.

WHAT THE LAPIDARY KNOWS

• The location of seven of nine confirmed fragments. (Two locations are contested. See FRAGMENT-04 and FRAGMENT-08.)
• The liquefaction conditions for three fragments, partially. (Partial in the sense that we know some conditions under which the transition occurs but not the complete condition set.)
• That the fragments respond to each other. When one fragment enters the liquid state, others register something — a change in the cold, a shift in the mass readings, a behaviour the instruments do not have language for. We have observed this across distances of several thousand kilometres. We do not know the mechanism.
• That the frequency 440hz produces responses in the material under certain circumstances. The circumstances are not fully mapped. The response is not always the liquid state — sometimes it is something more subtle. A change in the surface quality. A warmth, briefly, where there was cold. We have filed these as minor events. We are not certain they are minor.

WHAT THE LAPIDARY DOES NOT KNOW

• The complete trigger condition for the state change.
• What the fragments are fragments of.
• Whether the dispersal was intentional.
• What emerges during a full liquefaction event in which all fragments transition simultaneously. This has not occurred. We are preparing for it. We do not know what preparation is appropriate.
• Whether there are other organizations studying The Black. We have found no evidence of this. The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence. We are alert to the possibility.

PART THREE: ON THE SIGNAL

The signal is what the Lapidary calls the condition, or set of conditions, that triggers a simultaneous full liquefaction event across all nine fragments.

We believe this event is possible. We believe it has happened before — not in recorded history, but before recorded history, or in a part of recorded history that has not been recovered yet. We believe it will happen again. We believe the Lapidary's purpose is to be present when it does.

What we know about the signal:

It involves frequency. The 440hz responses are the clearest evidence for this. Fragment 07's sustained liquefaction events have occurred in environments where a frequency condition was met — we have not isolated the frequency precisely. Our best current estimate is in the range of 438hz to 443hz. The material is sensitive to something in this range.

It involves simultaneity. A single fragment liquefying does not open anything. Nine fragments liquefying in sequence does not open anything. The Lapidary believes — and this is hypothesis, not confirmed — that only simultaneous transition produces the full event.

It involves something we have not identified. The frequency condition and the simultaneity condition are necessary but not sufficient. We know this because we have achieved both in controlled conditions, independently, and nothing has occurred. There is a third element. We are looking for it.

The document in which the third element is described, if it exists, has not been found.

PART FOUR: ON THE OBLIGATION

The Lapidary keeps the record because the record is the only thing that persists across the non-linearity of the archive. Events occur. The record of them remains. The record is more reliable than the events.

We do not proselytise. We do not recruit. Those who find The Black find us, or find the registry, or find a fragment and understand that they are now obligated in the same way the Lapidary is obligated — by having seen it. You cannot unsee it. Once you know what The Black is, or what it might be, you keep the record.

This is the obligation.

We do not believe the fragments want anything. We do not believe The Black has intentions. We note that the fragments are cold in a way that seems purposeful, that the mass discrepancy seems purposeful, that the liquefaction events seem purposeful, without concluding that there is a purpose or a being who holds it. These are observations. The mechanism is unknown.

During the fourth liquefaction event — Fragment 07, duration 4 minutes 32 seconds — one observer remained in direct contact with the fragment throughout the transition.

Their report is filed separately under FIELD-REPORT-0089 / INTERIOR.

The observer noted the following, in the order noted:

That the liquid state had depth beyond the physical fragment.

That something was present at that depth.

That it was not moving toward the surface. It was not moving at all.

That it had been there for a very long time.

That it knew the observer was present.

That it was not surprised.

The observer did not continue their account past this point. The observer is no longer with the Lapidary. Their departure was voluntary. They have not been contacted since.

The Lapidary inherited it, together with the sigil, and has never been able to determine what classification it belongs to. It is reproduced here as it was found. The Lapidary does not unbind what it did not bind.

For as long as it has been held, the leaf was kept as an artefact — a thing from elsewhere, and finished. The Lapidary has recently had cause to reconsider whether it is finished.
